1. The five phases of ranking recovery: how to get your rankings back
Has your website been penalized by Google? No need to panic. Take control of your website success and get your rankings back by following the tips below.

Most people go through the following five phases when their website has been penalized by Google:

  1. Denial: "Google hasn't penalized my website. This is just a temporary error in Google's algorithm. My website rankings will be back next week."
  2. Anger: "It's not fair. Google has no right to downrank my website. They are a monopolist. If I had the money, I'd sue them. I'm not the only one who used the spam tools. All of my competitors have used these tools, too. If my website gets penalized, they should be penalized, too."
  3. Bargaining: "If I hadn't used this particular spamming tool, all of this wouldn't have happened. If only I had done this or that then my website wouldn't have been penalized."
  4. Depression: "It doesn't make sense to optimize my web pages. Google will penalize them anyway. SEO is crap. It doesn't work. It's all just a big rip-off."
  5. Acceptance: "It seems that I have to do some real work if I want to get high rankings. Business on the Internet is still business and it should be treated as such. There are no shortcuts."

How to get your rankings back

The first thing that you must understand is that search engine optimization (SEO) is not the same as spamming. Unfortunately, a lot of spamming tools are sold as SEO tools. That's why many people think that SEO equals spamming search engines.

Real search engine optimization has nothing to do with cheating search engines. Good search engine optimization leads to a symbiotic relationship that is beneficial to search engines, businesses and searchers.

If done correctly, Google actually likes SEO and optimized websites.

Do the right things

Google: your robots.txt file should be simple

"In an online discussion, Google’s John Mueller said that it’s better to have simple robots.txt files. [...] I’d really recommend keeping the robots.txt file as simple as possible, so that you don’t have trouble with maintenance and that it’s really only disallowing resources that are problematic when crawled.”

StatisticsQ1 global paid search spending grew 33 percent over last year
"Spending on pay-per-click advertising (PPC) by its enterprise technology, consumer electronics, and retail clients rose 33 percent over the same period a year ago and 9 percent versus the fourth quarter of 2012. [...]

As for global keyword pricing, the report suggests that cost-per-click trends experienced over the last six quarters have reversed with CPC prices rising 7 percent."

Google: we don't like sponsored content

"It’s difficult to be trusted when one is being paid by the subject of an article, or selling or monetizing links within an article. [...]

Google News takes action against sites that violate our quality guidelines. Engagement in deceptive or promotional tactics such as those described above may result in the removal of articles, or even the entire publication, from Google News."

StatisticsStudy: searches on smartphones up 25.5%

"The total number of U.S. searchers on mobile phones grew steadily last year - from 90.1 million mobile phone visitors to search/navigation sites or apps in March 2012 to 113.1 million in December 2012. Tablets also grew as a source for online searches, with 19% growth between April 2012 and December 2012."

Google's Eric Schmidt about author rank

"Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance. [...]

It becomes clear that Schmidt isn’t talking about what Google is doing now nor even about what it might do with a Google+ account. He’s speculating on how governments themselves might change, and in turn, try to control information."
