1. Save time and money: how to get backlinks if your website looks like - ugh

Getting good backlinks to your website is very important if you want to get high rankings. If you want to save time and money, you should check if your website is link worthy before you start with your link building campaign.

No one wants to link to your website if it looks spammy. If your website design looks like 1999 then it's likely that your site won't get many links.

Link building campaign checklist

Make sure that your website is worth sharing before you try to get backlinks. You will waste time and money if your website is not ready:

  1. Get a good domain name: Your domain name should not sound spammy. If your domain looks like www.cheapest-stuff-get-here-another-keyword-stuffed.com then try to get a new domain name.
  2. Make sure that your website is spam free: Nobody wants to link to a spammer. If your website uses any suspicious SEO practices, stop using them now.
  3. Check your website content: Your pages should have decent content, the items in your shop should have good product descriptions and the content of your website should look fresh.
  4. Check your website design: Your website should have a good design with an easy-to-use interface. It is very important that your web pages have a professional look.

These factors are very important. Don't start your link building campaign before you are absolutely sure that your website is linkworthy.

Build backlinks that help real people

Since Google's Penguin updates, it doesn't help anymore to get hundreds of backlinks from random websites. It's more important to get good backlinks that are actually helpful.

When you try to get a backlink from another website, explain why the visitors of the other website would benefit from a link to your site. The value of your website must be clear.

Getting your website in shape takes some time but it will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. SEOprofiler helps you to optimize your web pages and it also helps you to get good backlinks from related websites.

How Google may substitute query terms with co-occurrence (patent)

"If I search for 'car repair' and follow it up on a search for 'auto repair,' I would suspect that I would see a lot of the same pages, but perhaps not in the same order. [...]

One particular indicator of how good a particular candidate substitute term is for an original query term is to compare co-occurrence frequencies for terms that co-occur with the original term and with the candidate substitute term in search queries."

StatisticscomScore Releases July 2013 U.S. search engine rankings
"19.4 billion explicit core searches were conducted in July, with Google Sites ranking first with nearly 13 billion (up 1 percent). Microsoft Sites ranked second with 3.5 billion searches (up 1 percent), followed by Yahoo! Sites with 2.2 billion, Ask Network with 516 million and AOL, Inc. with 239 million. [...]

Google Sites led the U.S. explicit core search market in July with 67 percent market share (up 0.3 percentage points), followed by Microsoft Sites with 17.9 percent and Yahoo! Sites with 11.3 percent. Ask Network accounted for 2.7 percent of explicit core searches, followed by AOL, Inc. with 1.2 percent."

Editor's note: 19.4 billion searches per month mean a lot of potential customers for your business. Use SEOprofiler to make sure that your website can be found for the right keywords.

Discussion: webmasters are scared to link to other websites

"Recently I have read about the pros and cons of linking out to good sites, for example authorities or at least relevant and successful ranking sites. [...]

I'd like to implement more of them. It's natural, good for the user and connects you with good sites, even if you are the generously giving part. My question is not if, it's how doing it: with a) follow/nofollow, b) the main keyword of the page as anchor?"

Editor's note: as long as the link is good for the user, don't worry about the way you link to the site. The tools in SEOprofiler can help you to find good link partners that will increase the search engine rankings of your website.

GoogleGoogle is fudging cost/conversion stats

"I don’t know why I didn’t notice it before. I guess I trusted that a field labeled as 'Cost/conv.' was a simple arithmetic calculation where they divided the cost by the number of conversions. But Google is fudging cost/conversion stats and I think they need to fix it. [...]

As you can see, this is not a 'small' problem. For this campaign alone it is tens of thousands of dollars of spend that seems to just disappear. And the problem is getting worse over time. Google is ignoring more and more spend as time goes on."

The 2013 state of paid search!

"83% of  PPC marketers said they are feeling positive about the state of paid search. 65% said they feel optimistic compared to 2012.

70% increased PPC spend this year and 72% of respondents plan to increase their PPC spend in 2014."
