1. Seven reasons why people don't want to link to your website (plus solutions)

Links from other websites are extremely important if you want to get high rankings on Google. Unfortunately, it can be very hard to get good backlinks. Sometimes, your website itself is the reason why other people don't want to link to it. Here are seven reasons why other people do not want to link to your site:

7 reasons why people don't want to link to your site

1. Your website looks like it's 2005

Ten years are a very long time on the Internet. If your website was designed in 2005, it will look extremely outdated. The Internet is full of good looking pages. If your website cannot compete with them, people will go elsewhere.

Your web pages must be easy to read. Use a modern design, big headlines and an easy to skim page structure.

2. Your website is bloated

If you have twenty different pages on your website that basically contain the same content, it is difficult to choose the right page for the link.

Make sure that your website has a clear focus and that it's easy to find the right pages on your site. Having multiple pages with slightly changed content will only trigger Google's Panda algorithm.

3. Your website contains broken links and images

If the homepage of your website contains a big broken image then people will think that your website isn't updated anymore. Nobody wants to link to dying pages.

Check your pages with the website audit tool in SEOprofiler to make sure that it does not contain broken links that drive visitors and linkers away.

4. Your website is sloooooooooow
People are impatient. If it takes too long until your website is rendered in the web browser, most people will go to another page. In addition, page speed is a ranking signal for Google. Make sure that all pages of your website load quickly.
5. Your website content is outdated
Do you have a blog on your website? Is the last blog post several months old? Better remove the blog from your website. If you cannot maintain a blog, it can do more harm than good. People don't want to link to abandoned websites.
6. Your website has way too many ads
A website that contains too many ads does not look like a professional site. People do not want to link to ads. They want to link to websites with content.
7. The content of your website is unoriginal
If your website only contains content that can be found elsewhere, it's not likely that many people will link to your site. For example, there are more than 382,000 results for the search term "how to train a dog".

If your page is one of them then you must offer something special so that people link to your site and not to the other sites.

2. Search engine news and articles of the week
Googlebot supports TLS 1.2
Google announced on their Google+ page that Googlebot now supports TLS 1.2, i.e. it can now read these encrypted pages:

"Googlebot now supports TLS version 1.2, in addition to previous versions: TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and SSLv3.

Reminder: old OpenSSL versions are vulnerable; we strongly recommend that you use the latest and newest versions of TLS libraries."

GoogleUpdate on how Google displays snippets on mobile SERPs

"Googlebot for Smartphones uses iPhone-based user-agent and obeys robots.txt, robots meta tag, and HTTP header directives for “Googlebot”, same as desktop. [...]

Starting today, we’ll display a message in place of the description snippet for mobile search results blocking Googlebot for smartphones, just as we already do for search results blocking Googlebot."

Google: we might not announce the next Penguin update

"In a Google Hangout, Google’s John Mueller said that the next Penguin update might not be announced: 'We are generally moving to a little bit of a faster [Google Penguin] update cycle there. But I can’t say that it will be monthly, there might be some changes there, subtle differences with the timing.'"

BingNow available in Bing Ads: campaign performance data in under an hour

"You will now see your clicks and impressions in less than an hour of them occurring, down from 4 hours in the past. [...] Faster performance data, as well as impression and click performance reports (see list below) are all visible on the Campaign page.  If you use the Bing Ads Reporting API, then you will need to set a flag on API calls indicating that you want to see data as it arrives (see the FAQ section below)."

Google mobile usability reports have a delay
In an online discussion, a webmaster wondered why it takes so long until the reports get updated:

"The reports have been updating almost every 3 days with the latest pages found with issues but the last update was on January 12. Since then no more pages have been reported but Google keeps crawling the site every day. Is this OK?

I have been fixing many pages but there are still many pages to go. Many of the fixed pages are still listed in the reports with report dates back to before the fixes, but I do not see any decrease in the pages with issues because the reports stopped updating."

Editor's note: it is normal that the reports have a delay. Also see "Google sends mobile usability warnings to webmasters (and what you have to do now)".
