1. How the hub finder tool can help you to greatly improve your rankings

Are you living in a bad neighborhood? Your website might be. The websites that link to your site help Google understand what other sites are similar to your site. It's a surprise to many webmasters that it is also important to which other web pages these websites link.

Why does it matter to which other pages other websites link?

If four different websites link to gambling sites and to your website, search engines will think that your website is related to gambling.

If websites 1, 2, 3 and 4 all link to the websites A, B, C and D then A, B, C and D are related, even if there is no direct link between them.

The more websites link to the same set of sites, the stronger the relationship. This concept is called co-citation and it is an important ranking factor for Google. For that reason, it is important that the links to your website come from the right sites.

How the hub finder tool helps you to get the right backlinks

2. Search engine news and articles of the week
Alexander Sadovsky about low quality links in Yandex

"A year ago we did an analysis of all links in Russia and we saw that about 74% of them were paid links. When we removed the links from our ranking formula, we hoped that people would stop buying links and focus on improving their sites, but we didn’t see the effect of it coming fast enough. After one year the amount of paid links only decreased by 14%. [...]

After sending notifications about upcoming penalty, about 37% of selected for the first wave of Minusinsk sites had removed paid links. [...]

People should get used to the thought that paid links are evil and the evil is punished not for one day, but for a longer time. The period, when the site will be lowered in the search results is a few months, up to half a year."

GoogleGoogle plans to make HTTPS ranking signal stronger

"At SMX Advanced, [.. Google's] Gary Illyes said that HTTPS is super important and they do have plans to improve it and make it stronger [...]

SEOs once again might want to start thinking about switching their sites to secure again, as many stopped working on it once it became known the boost for secure sites was fairly miniscule. But with both Chrome and Firefox making changes or deprecations that would alert users to unsecure sites, switching over will become even more important for reasons completely outside of Google search."

New in SEOprofiler: 1,224 new locations for regional ranking checks

"We have added 1,224 new locations to the local ranking check feature in SEOprofiler. [...] The ranking monitor in SEOprofiler supports all official 86,461 locations that are supported by Google. 55,120 of these locations are in the USA."

BingCheck URLs in Bing Places for Business

"Bing Places for Business seems to either not have checks in place or they are having code errors on their back end. [...]

While it is not exactly sure who made the mistake, it is definitely unusual since it had the correct URL originally.  So it is probably worth the few extra seconds to ensure your Bing Places for Business are using the correct URLs, and make any fixes needed."

Google backed company violates Google's own link policies

"It seems to me that despite Google’s continuous protestations that organic search results are independently determined and not manipulated, this appears to be a way for Google to make money on organic traffic.

By providing companies in which they have a direct financial investment with superior positioning, Google can avoid the appearance of organic search results manipulation."
