1. New in SEOprofiler: Google algorithm updates (and three other things)

The Ranking Monitor is one of the most popular tools in SEOprofiler. We have added several new features that make working with your rankings even easier than before.

1. Google algorithm updates in ranking progression charts

As of today, the ranking progression charts also show the date of recent Google updates. If your rankings changed dramatically on a particular day, it might have been related to a Google update:

Move the mouse pointer over the chart to view information about a particular day. If there was a ranking algorithm on that day (see the top of the chart), it will be displayed in the popup info box.

2. Individual columns for regular rankings and extra rankings

Some websites are ranked several times for the same keyword. For example, a website can be listed in the local map pack and in the organic rankings. Other websites are ranked in the image results or the news results.

Until now, the overview table on the page ‘Ranked Keywords’ only showed the top ranking that a website had for a keyword. Then you had to click the ‘Details’ button to get all rankings of the website for the keyword. This could be confusing if the top ranking was an image ranking.

The new version of the Ranking Monitor now shows both the regular ranking and the highest extra ranking in the overview table:

regular rankings and extra rankings

In this example, the website is listed on position 11 in Google’s regular results for the keyword ‘example keyword phrase’. In addition, the website is listed in the local map page in position 2. As the extra position is in the local results, the position is marked with a red local marker.

In addition to the regular results, the Ranking Monitor in SEOprofiler checks local results, video results, news results, image results, finance results, and shopping results. All of these types have their own visual marker in the Ranking Monitor.

3. Manage your keywords with tags

If you check your rankings for many keywords, it can become difficult to keep track of all keywords. Tags enable you to create keyword clusters without changing the actual keywords.

Example: If you sell shoes, you could add the tags ‘sport shoes’, ‘running shoes’ and ‘nike’ to the keyword “Men’s Air Max Tavas”. Then you can filter your keyword lists to view all running shoes, even if the keywords do not contain the term ‘running shoes’.

The new version of the Ranking Monitor enables you to use an unlimited number of tags with your keywords.

tag your keywords

Just enter your tags in the tag box. After adding your tags, you can use the filters on the page ‘Ranked keywords’ to find particular keywords:

4. Much faster performance

We have dramatically improved the performance of the Ranking Monitor pages. People who monitor several hundred pages sometimes had load times of several seconds. For these customers, the pages now load 40 times faster than before!

Of course, all other customers will also see performance improvements. The more keywords you monitor, the more noticable is the improvement.

See for yourself

2. Internet marketing news of the week

John MuellerGoogle’s John Mueller: getting links from spammy sites is different from getting unnatural links

"On Twitter, Google’s John Mueller said that links from spammy sites can be ignored as long as these links aren’t unnatural:

That means that not all links on spam sites are unnatural. You can have natural links that happen to be on spammy sites. According to John Mueller, you can ignore the links on spammy sites and focus on removing unnatural links."

Google: Geotargeting promotes but hreflang does not promote a site

"The question was 'can I geo-target for one country while leaving an other country not geo-targeted to serve the rest of the world?' [...]

[Google's John Mueller explained] the difference between geotargeting and using hreflang. [...] With geotargeting, Google will promote the localized version to the local version of that Google search.

With hreflang, there is no promotion or demotion but rather Google will swap out the URLs with the appropriate URLs for the country and language."

John MuellerGoogle crawls 404s after other pages so no crawl budget is sacrificed

"Everyone knows, Google from time to time will try crawling 404s - it is normal and expected. But does that impact your crawl budget? John Mueller of Google says it does not. [...]

They prioritize your crawl budget on your more important URLs and if there is more crawl budget left, they may go ahead and use some of that to try old 404s."
