Welcome to the latest issue of the Search Engine Facts newsletter.

In an online video, Google's Matt Cutts has answered the question of another Googler, John Mueller. If your website has an archive of hundreds of thousands of pages, should you add these pages at once or in stages? Depending on what you do, this can trigger a manual review of your website.

In the news: a new search result page click-through study, Google's John Mueller talks about cloaking, Bing and Apple cooperate, and more.

1. Google: how many pages can I add at once?

In an online video, Google's Matt Cutts answered the question of another Googler, John Mueller. If your website has an archive of hundreds of thousands of pages, should you add these pages at once or in stages?

too many web pages

What was the exact question?

John Mueller asked the following: "A newspaper company wants to add an archive with 200k pages. Should they add it all at once or in steps?"

Matt Cutts' answer: it depends

Matt Cutts said that Google can handle both methods. If a website releases hundreds of thousands websites overnight, however, it is very likely that the website will be reviewed manually by Google's spam team.
He recommends that websites should publish new sites in larger blocks and not all of them at once. If all pages are published at once, Google will manually review them, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

What does this mean for your website?

If you plan to spam Google with automatically created websites: don't do it. If you have many pages with good contents, then you don't have to worry about a manual web spam review by Google.

If you don't want to draw attention to your website, you should not publish thousands of pages at once. In that case, you should also reconsider your SEO strategy.

Search engine optimization strategies that are based on cheating Google usually lead to short-term results and a total ban from Google's results as soon as Google finds out.

If you're not trying to cheat Google, you don't have to worry about the number of web pages that you publish. Use safe SEO methods that lead to lasting results. SEOprofiler is a safe SEO tool that only uses search engine optimization methods that play by the rules:

Study: the value of Google result positioning

"Chitika Insights examined tens of millions of online ad impressions in which the user was referred to the page via a Google search. From the referring Google URL, Chitika is able to extract the position that the page was on within the prior search results page. From this, Chitika can measure what percentage of Google traffic comes from each position of the search results page. [...]

Sites listed on the first Google search results page generate 92% of all traffic from an average search. When moving from page one to two, the traffic dropped by 95%, and by 78% and 58% for the subsequent pages.

While being the number one result on a Google search results page is obviously important, these numbers show just how big of an advantage websites of this type have over any competitors listed below them."

John MuellerGoogle's John Mueller: do not cloak, even if it makes sense
In an online discussion, a webmaster asks if it is okay to deliver different URLs to search engines and visitors as long as the content is similar. Google's John Mueller said that you should not do that:

"Giving mixed signals like this is not going to deliver consistent results over time. I'd strongly recommend finding one site structure and using it consistently."

More features arrive on Bing Desktop

"Now you can search directly from a web page, word document or PDF file simply by highlighting the word or phrase and clicking the Bing icon. [...] We are announcing a new weather app and have overhauled the news and Facebook apps from the ground up with a new look that makes it easier to stay up to date at a glance."

BingBing becomes the default search engine for Apple Siri

"Starting this fall with iOS 7, Bing will power Siri's new integrated web search. When users ask Siri a question either the specific answer or web search links will now be delivered automatically so users can find information even faster.

Bing was designed from the outset to be a great place for web search helping customers quickly find what they are looking for and get more out of search. We are thrilled that all the great results people have come to know and love on Bing.com will now be available to Siri users on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. "

Discussion: Google Webmaster Tools shows false URL removals

"When I pull up the 'Index Status' page and go to advanced and see the removed URLs I have two URLs removed. When I go to the 'URL Removal' page it tells me that I did not request any URLs to be removed.

Also, my robots.txt file is not blocking any URLs. How do I see which URLs have been removed? As far as I know, all my URLs should be in the index. I put in a reconsideration request asking why the URLs were removed and I got the canned 'No manual spam actions found' which I assume is some robot that doesn't actually read the question I asked."
