1. Ride the wave: why change is good for your business

Search engine optimization (SEO) is continually evolving. Things that worked great in the past can trigger a ranking penalty today. Technology is always undergoing change and you have to make sure that you do the right things if you do not want to become obsolete tomorrow.

Here are some things that you can do to make sure that your business gets the best results from search engine optimization:

1. Accept that change is constant

Change is the only constant in life. Six years ago, tablet computers did not exist. Today, you can buy tablet computers in different sizes, with different operating systems, from different manufacturers. For a company that sells computer related goods, it wasn't necessary to have high rankings for the keyword 'tablet'. Today, there are many different 'tablet' key phrases that can deliver a high return-on-investment.

To get lasting results, you have to watch trends. The words that are used by customers and prospects can change. Your business has to change when markets change. Ride the wave. Stopping it won't work.

2. Watch your competitors and learn from them

Innovation and evolution is necessary if you want to succeed. Several years ago, Apple just built computers. Nowadays, they compete with companies such as Spotify. Netflix competes with traditional TV. The companies who are your competitors can change.

Google reveals one reason for slow Panda updates

"Gary Illyes from Google made an interesting comment about why we don’t see more frequent updates of the Panda Algorithm. [...]

llyes revealed that in order to update or refresh, they need to gather data from it. He said sometimes the data won’t work because there is noise or problems with the data, so then they have to wait another month for more data.

He doesn’t specify specifically what type of noise or problems they can run into when looking at the data as it relates to Panda, just that they data isn’t usable and they need to wait for another month’s worth of data."

GoogleTechnically, you can have completely different content on mobile says Google

"Gary Illyes from Google confirms Google really only looks at the desktop content for mobile ranking purposes. [...]

So, technically, if you serve up a URL with content about Alice In Wonderland on the desktop version, but you decide to serve up content about Payday Loans on the mobile version, Google will rank the mobile version as if the page was about Alice In Wonderland.

Illyes explained that Google set up a spam team to investigate if these practices were happening, and he was a bit surprised to see it wasn’t. He said Google has checked for over a year and didn’t find site owners doing this. He explained that it doesn’t mean that Google won’t be able to take action on webmasters who go this route."

SoundHound’s new voice search app makes Siri and Cortana look slow

"Hound the app functions and feels almost exactly like Google's Voice Search, but seems much faster at identifying words and delivering answers. In our demo, which contained several dozen scripted questions but also some impromptu ones, the words coming out of Mohajer's mouth popped up on screen nearly as fast as he was saying them, and Hound would pipe back with an answer faster than seemed possible."

BingBing is testing single line Sitelinks in organic search results

"This certainly reduces the footprint that brands get in the Bing search results, especially since many of those brands are used to locking down a large amount of above-the-fold real estate on the screen – sometimes as many as ten sitelinks with descriptions."

Google drops Google+ promotion from Gmail, search & other Google services

"Google takes another step away from the days of heavy promotion of the social network on other Google products. [...]

'No, Google Plus is not dead,” [Google's] Horowitz said. 'In fact, it’s got more signs of life than it’s had in some time.'"
