1. Official Google Statement: JavaScript content won't be indexed

On Twitter, Google's Gary Illyes confirmed that Google does not index content that is hidden in a JavaScript array. Google said similar things before. If important parts of your content require JavaScript, you might want to reconsider your website design.

What exactly has Google's Gary Illyes said?

Gary Illyes sent a public service announcement (PSA) on Twitter: "PSA: If you put contents in a javascript array and only expand them when you click e.g. '...', those contents won't be indexed by Google."

JavaScript and Google

Can Google index content in JavaScript?

In general, Google is able to parse web pages that require JavaScript or AJAX. However, this can also cause problems.

For example, Google's Gary Illyes said in July that Google "won't see the content behind tabs if the content under the tab is dynamically generated." Similar things have been said by Google's John Mueller before.

How to check if you Google can index your web pages

If Google cannot index your web pages correctly, the rankings of your web pages won't be as good as they could be.

For that reason, it is important to check your web pages regularly to make sure that a) Google and other search engines can index them and that they b) have everything that search engine robots require from a web page.

2. Search engine news and articles of the week
Google: websites that are crawled often do not rank better

"In a Google webmaster hangout, Google’s John Mueller said that a high crawl frequency does not mean that a website will rank higher. [...]

It’s not true that if a page is not crawled regularly that it won’t show up in rankings at all. In general, we try to do our crawling based on when we think this page might be changing or how often it might be changing."

John MuellerJohn Mueller: how Google looks for rich snippet spam

"On Twitter, Google’s John Mueller was asked how Google looked for rich snippet spam. According to John Mueller, Google detects rich snippet spam through algorithms and manual spam reports."

Google: it's not too late to clean your links for Penguin

"[Google's Gary Illyes] said that the timeline [for Penguin] is by the end of the year and as far as he knows, that timeline has not changed. [...]

In regards to the next version of Penguin being real-time, Gary said that he can't guarantee it. However, the plan is for Penguin to be real-time [...] There might be a chance that Google will have to push the refresh without it being real-time. But the plan is for this next release to be real time."

GoogleDoes Google respect robots.txt NoIndex and should you use it?

"The NoIndex directive in Robots.txt is pretty effective. It worked in 11 out of 12 cases we tested. It might work for your site, and because of how it’s implemented it gives you a path to prevent crawling of a page and also have it removed from the index. That’s pretty useful in concept. However, our tests didn’t show 100 percent success, so it does not always work."

Google updates its ranking algorithm for mobile results

"As announced some weeks ago, Google has updated the ranking algorithm for mobile results. Websites that use full page app install interstitials won’t be considered mobile friendly."
