Welcome to a new issue of the Search Engine Facts newsletter.

This week we're explaining how Google updates its database and the newest ranking algorithm changes at Google.

By the way, thank you so much for your very positive feedback on our new software program Internet Business Promoter (IBP). We're happy that the new Top 10 Ranking Optimizer of IBP seems to meet the needs of many webmasters.

1. Facts of the week: Google's everflux and fresh crawl

Google updates its entire database of Web sites about once a month. This process of updating the database is called the "Google Dance" because the newly indexed Web pages appear first at www2.google.com, then they'll be transferred to www3.google.com until they finally appear in the main index at www.google.com.

The Google Dance usually lasts only a couple of days near the end of each month. This month, the Google Dance was a little late when it started on March, 6th.

When you read this newsletter, the Google Dance should be over and Google should have a new and updated index. Check out if your rankings have changed in the new index:

The monthly update is only one of two separate update processes at Google. Since June 2002, Google changes rankings all through the month. The ongoing change became known as "everflux".

Google introduced a "fresh crawl" process to make their results as relevant and as fresh as possible. It runs each day. The purpose of the daily fresh crawl is to update Web pages in the index that change regularly. This allows Google to provide results that are up-to-date with current events.

The fresh crawl not only adds modified pages but also new pages. However, those pages stay in the Google search results for only a few days. Only after the next major update you can tell if those pages will stay for a longer time in the index.

So when you see your Web site appear in the Google search results and then you check some days later and your site has disappeared, don't panic. In this case, your site has been found and indexed by the fresh crawler. Be patient, your site will be listed at the end of this month or at the end of the following month. 2 . Search engine news of the week

* Google changes ranking algorithms for expired domains

A Google employee said in the WebmasterWorld forum that this month' update introduced some "algorithmic improvements for spam issues."

He continued: "One resulting improvement with this index is better handling of expired domains--the authority for a domain will be reset when a domain expires, even though dangling links to the expired domain are still out on the web. We'll be rolling this change in over the next few months starting with this index.

Most webmasters won't notice much change, but I wanted to give folks some advance notice. If your toolbar display changes a little up or down--don't panic. :) The change I mentioned, plus things like having more pages crawled in our index, can affect the toolbar display. As always, the traffic and conversions you get matter more than how many green pixels the toolbar shows."

This means that when you buy an expired domain, then Google doesn't take pre-existing links into account anymore. If Google had penalized the old domain, then those penalties would remain.

* Translating Flash for search sites

Macromedia, the developer of the Flash/Shockwave tool for Web page animations, is trying to convince the search engines to use its new developer tool kit to extract text and links from Flash animations. So far, only AllTheWeb has announced support for the toolkit.

* Go.com/Infoseek now displays Google results

Google announced that it will power several Walt Disney Internet Group Web properties such as Disney.com, Go.com, Movies.com and FamilyFun.com.

* Google officially announced automated content-targeted ads

Last week, we reported that Google introduced automated content-targeted ads to its advertisers. Now Google has made it official by sending out a press release.

If your site receives more than 20 million page views per month, then you could display Google content-targeted ads.

* Sprinks to offer contextual text ads, too

Like Google, the pay per click search engine Sprinks has started offering contextually targeted text ads. The ads will appear on sites such as About.com, iVillage.com, Forbes.com.

3. Articles of the week

Two days ago, Google was offline for just a few minutes, but it seems like everyone noticed.
