2. Search engine news and articles of the week
Discussion: Google bug removes website from the search results
"Our Company Website has been removed from the Google Search engine with a note 'Suspected child abuse' which is totally absurd as we are dealing with IT Log Management Solutions as can be verified.

Answer of Google's John Mueller: It looks like there was a mistake in handling a feed of data, we apologize for the mistake."

DuckDuckGoDuckDuckGo: the plucky upstart taking on Google with secure searches
"Gabriel Weinberg launched DuckDuckGo as a search engine that puts privacy first, rather than collecting data for advertisers and security agencies [...]

Instant answers and spam filtering were really the initial focus there and still are in terms of product differentiation. But very quickly after that – I would have done it from the beginning had I actually thought about it, but I hadn't – was privacy."

Google UK adds in-depth articles to search

"To understand a broad topic, sometimes you need more than a quick answer. Our research indicates perhaps 10% of people’s daily information needs fit this category - topics like stem cell research, happiness, and love, to name just a few.

That's why over the next few days we’ll be rolling out a new feature to help you find relevant in-depth articles in the main Google Search results."

Matt CuttsHow does Google separate popularity from authority?

"In a video on YouTube, Google’s Matt Cutts explained that popularity and authority are two different things. For example, adult websites are often much more popular than government websites. Government websites are usually much more authoritative than adult sites. Popularity and authority are different concepts."

LA Times: Yelp's practices sound to some like extortion

"I think Yelp is a flawed but valuable consumer tool. I take the reviews on the site with a grain of salt, but it's a great place to get a quick pulse reading of people's opinions about restaurants, stores or other businesses. [...]

About 83% of the company's nearly $71 million in revenue in the most recent quarter came from local ads. This gives Yelp a powerful incentive to turn the screws on small businesses as much as it can."
