2. Internet marketing news of the week

John MuellerGoogle: how to write your meta descriptions

"This month, Google has extended the maximum size of the meta description that is displayed on search result pages from 160 characters to 320 characters.

Although the maximum length has been increased, Google still decides whether or not they show the text from the meta description. Google also decides how long the displayed description is."

Google: check your log files to find out if your site moved to the mobile-first index

"In a webmaster hangout on YouTube, Google’s John Mueller said that your log files can show you if your website has been moved to the mobile-first index.

According to John Mueller, 80% of Googlebot crawling is done by their desktop crawler, and 20% are done by the mobile crawler. If your website is in the mobile-first index, you will see an 80% crawl rate by the mobile version of Googlebot in your log files and a 20% crawl rate by the desktop version."

John MuellerGoogle does not recommend generic disavow files

"In a Google webmaster hangout, a webmaster asked Google’s John Mueller if it was okay to use one generic disavow links file that can be used for all sites that he manages.

John Mueller said that this was unnecessary work and that it’s not recommended by Google."

Google’s definition of doorway pages

"Google does not like doorway pages. In a webmaster hangout on YouTube, Google’s John Mueller gave is own definition of doorway pages. [...]

Doorways are sites or pages created to rank highly for specific search queries. They are bad for users because they can lead to multiple similar pages in user search results, where each result ends up taking the user to essentially the same destination."
