1. How to get high rankings in Google's local results (4 steps)

Depending on your business, it can be important to be listed in Google's local results. Google's local results use a different ranking algorithm than Google's organic results. How can you make sure that Google will list your website? What do you have to do to improve your rankings in the local results?

local results on Google

Google uses unique variables in the local ranking algorithm. However, Google's local algorithm and the organic algorithm are interconnected. Websites with good traditional SEO elements also get better rankings in Google's local results. Here are some things that you can do to improve your position in the local search results:

1. Have an active Google My Business account

Of course, you should have a listing on Google My Business if you want to get listed in the local results. However, it is not enough to have a listing.

Listings with many photos, hours and a lot of information about the business tend to get better rankings than other listings.

2. Try to get reviews and respond to them

Reviews are a ranking factor for Google. Listings with many reviews tend to get better rankings. In addition, it helps if the keywords that you are trying to rank for appear in the reviews. There's also a correlation between high rankings and a mention of the city in the review text.

Businesses that respond to reviews also tend to get higher rankings than businesses that do not respond.

3. Optimize your links

Links are a crucial factor for high rankings in Google's organic results. They also help you to get higher rankings in the local results. If the links that point to your website contain the keyword and the city in the anchor text, it is more likely that your website will get high rankings.

The link analysis tool and the link building tools in SEOprofiler help you to improve the links that point to your website.

4. Optimize your pages

Web pages that are optimized for the organic listings of a particular search term are more likely to be included in the local search results. If you want to get high rankings, include your keyword on the web page. Don't forget fundamental things such as making sure that your website is mobile-friendly, meta descriptions, etc.

John MuellerGoogle's John Mueller gives SEO advice

"In a thread in an online forum, Google’s John Mueller answered a webmaster who was listed on the last page of Google for the majority of the high traffic keywords she used to rank highly for. Here’s John’s advice."

If you’re using an Android phone, Google may be tracking every move you make

"Google, accurately, describes Location History as entirely opt-in. [...] When asked to opt in, however, the full implications of enabling Location History are rarely made clear. [...]

When the [Google Photos] 'Places' album is selected, the app requests to turn on Location History. [..] It doesn’t mention that in exchange for organizing your photos, you let Google record what stores you’re shopping in and what restaurants you’re eating at by collecting information about nearby Bluetooth beacons and wifi networks."

John MuellerGoogle's John Mueller: we don't use GPS coordinates schema in search

"In a webmaster hangout on YouTube, Google’s John Mueller said that Google does not use GPS coordinates that are mentioned in your structured data for search purposes. [...]

'We don’t use GPS coordinates in that regard. If you have addresses on a page then that’s something I would mark up but, as far as I know, we don’t use GPS coordinates.'"

Google Bulletin: hyperlocal news, Nextdoor competitor or both?

"Google has developed a global network of more than 50 million Local Guides, who are regularly contributing local information and business content. The company has thus proven it can crowdsource content for local communities and businesses on a massive scale."
